Just a short drive out of town is Chinaman Creek Dam, a popular recreation spot. The landscape surrounding the dam is quite distinctive with its red craggy rock formations and red termite hills poking up from the surrounding low hills. Swim, canoe, fish or simply take in the tranquility. Keen birdwatchers won't be disappointed; the dam attracts a huge variety of birdlife including cormorants, darters, ducks, pelicans, rainbow bee-eaters, corellas, white necked herons, pee wees, jacanas, hawks, straw necked ibises and the glossy ibis. There are a number of free barbecue and picnic facilities for you to make use of while there.
